The Objective of Hajjathon 2022

Saudi Arabia has made significant attempts and advancements to accommodate pilgrims’ demands and is in the process of constant improvement. Serving pilgrims, facilitating their execution of rites, and improving the efficiency of services offered to them are all priorities for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As a result, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research launched the Hajjathon in 2022. It is an initiative to develop technical and creative solutions, improve the quality of services, enrich pilgrims’ experiences, and stimulate the Hajj and Umrah’s infrastructure.

Umm Al-Qura University had arranged a workshop in collaboration with the College of Computer and Information Systems, represented by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research. It intended to examine projects that support efforts to improve the services provided to pilgrims and visitors. Additionally, it examined the scope of digital solutions for the issues of the Hajj and Umrah systems.

Digital transformation in the Hajj, Umrah

The 3-day workshop was held at the King Salman International Convention Centre and was themed ‘Digital Transformation in the Hajj, Umrah, and Visit System’. The workshop included pupils from the College of Engineering and Islamic Architecture, the College of Medicine, the College of Applied Medical Sciences, and the College of Public Health and Health Informatics. Besides, the inauguration of the 3-day workshop was attended by academic researchers interested in Hajj-Umrah visit studies, experts in digital transformation, representatives from the public and private sectors, financial and educational institutions, and youth leaders.

Hajjathon 2022 held with the 21st Scientific Forum for Hajj was a technical competition, and the registration for the first edition started in the last week of February ’22. Hajjathon 2022 brought together software and business developers and entrepreneurs from around the world to develop top-notch technical solutions to improve Hajj and Umrah services. It was a global opportunity for young people to demonstrate their ability to create innovative ways to expand pilgrim services. It also tapped into local and international data and artificial intelligence skills.

“The workshop aims at developing research ideas and initiatives that suit the themes of the 21st Scientific Forum for Research on Hajj, Umrah and Visits, which will be held this year under the title: “Digital Transformation in the Hajj, Umrah and Visit System.”– Dr. Turki Al-Amr, the head of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj, Umrah and Visitation Research.

With the new challenges imposed by COVID-19, apps like Tawakkalna have greatly enhanced the experience of Umrah and Hajj. To promote more such apps the government organised Hajjathon in Feb 2022. Numerous renowned entrepreneurs and business owners took part in the convention along with research leaders.

Pilgrims visit Makkah to perform the pilgrimage any time during the year, which is called ‘Umrah.’ Whereas ‘Hajj’ takes place on fixed dates according to the Islamic calendar once a year. COVID-19 Impact on Umrah : How the pandemic affected the pilgrimage in Makkah?

Hajj is believed as a way to wash your sins and get the mercy of Almighty Allah. It is also believed to unite the Muslims community. During Hajj and Umrah, Muslims are supposed to recite and perform prayers together, sit and eat together, and celebrate it with unity. Instead, the pandemic led to social distancing, which could not make it possible for people to come together for the pilgrimage. The pandemic led to the bifurcation of people into queues to avoid the overcrowding that existed before the pandemic. The number of people allowed at one time in the mosque was reduced to a very few ensuring that the social distancing is being followed. Additionally, face masks became mandatory for the visitors, and the people not wearing them had to bear the penalties. Police officers were on duty to note this and ensure that the guidelines were being followed.

The iftar meal (served when breaking the daylong fast) was also served in nicely sealed packages unlike previous years when pilgrims sat in lines to enjoy iftar together. The food was prepared with extreme hygiene and wellness. Moreover, the Zamzam water, considered holy water, was earlier collected from various watering points and made available in water bottles, while following social distancing and the government norms.

Primarily, the authorities used to ask the foreign pilgrims for a negative RT-PCR test report which should be taken within 48 hours before arriving in Saudi Arabia. In addition, they are also supposed to be quarantined at a government-approved hotel for 6 days or can again take a RT-PCR test after 2 days of quarantine, and if the report is negative, they can leave the hotel.

The pilgrims who want to get entry in Haram, the Grand Mosque of Makkah, have to bring their vaccination certificates and show them in advance.

A university lecturer in Saudi Arabia, Egyptian pilgrim Aly Aboulnaga said, “I hope this is a successful hajj season. We ask God to accept everyone’s hajj and for the area to be open to greater numbers of pilgrims and for a return to an even better situation than before.”

With the advent of technology, mobile apps are also helping in tracking the updates of COVID-19 personal stats. Many apps can be used to keep your vaccination certificate, to track and warn if anyone affected with coronavirus is near you. If you want to gather for a social event, an app will give you the permit for the gathering. The app will also trace the positive people if present at the party.

There is another mobile app specially designed for people who want to enter Haram, named Eatmarna. The app helps pilgrims to book a time slot for granting access to the Grand Mosque. It was created by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to ensure public safety and to avoid overcrowding.

Though it still can’t be predicted when the pandemic will end, the COVID-19 impact on Umrah and Hajj will be completely relaxed in the coming months, and Makkah will start hosting pilgrims from different areas of the globe. The current capacity is 70,000 a day for Umrah pilgrimage. The authorities are developing strategic plans to increase the number while ensuring the safety of the pilgrims. In the first milestone, the plan is to reach 120,000 pilgrims a day. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has also started receiving applications from vaccinated pilgrims from around the globe since August 9, 2021.

The phase of ‘Safe Umrah’ started on October 4, 2020. According to the reports, the capacity of pilgrims then was 6,000 a day in the Grand Mosque. On October 18, they increased the count of pilgrims to 10,000 and worshippers to 40,000 a day. With the increasing count of COVID-19 vaccination in Saudi Arabia and other countries of the world, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is making efforts to return to normalcy. A visa issued by the authorities of the Kingdom covers worshipping in the Prophet Mohammad Mosque in Madinah, Grand Mosque in Makkah, and Al Rawda Al Sharifa in Madinah.

What is ‘Safe Umrah’?

Coronavirus is known to have a drastically increased rate of spreading during mass gathering. As more and more pilgrims perform Safe Umrah in the coming months, it is crucial for the authorities and pilgrims to follow safety measures during their travel. In compliance with safety authorities, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah introduced the ‘Safe Umrah Model’ to prevent the spread of coronavirus when pilgrims gather in a mass. Keen on offering quality yet safe services, the ministry accepted applications of pilgrims and offered them precautions in terms of transportation, gathering in the holy mosques, and accommodation.

The Umrah pilgrims coming through the Gulf Cooperation Council have to register their COVID-19 vaccination status. The registration has to be done at the Muqeem portal, and that must happen 72 hours prior to their entry into Saudi Arabia. Assistant Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Eng. Hisham Saeed said that pilgrims aspiring to perform Umrah must download the Tawakkalna application on their mobile phones and book an appointment to obtain permits to perform the pilgrimage. The intending pilgrim can choose the timing to visit the Grand Mosque, Rawda Shareef, and Prophet Muhammad Mosque, he added.

Guidelines for pilgrims preforming Safe Umrah

According to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah guidelines, every overseas pilgrim must present an authorized certification for inoculation of COVID-19 vaccination. They must also present their Umrah request with the certificate. Vaccination is mandatory for every intending pilgrim to enter the Kingdom, use public transport, pray at mosques, and visit institutions. Pilgrims wishing to enter the holy mosques, Al-Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid al-Nabawi, must follow the COVID-19 protocols set up by the Ministry.

According to the latest report of the World Health Organisation, Saudi Arabia has confirmed 546,735 cases of coronavirus, and 8,679 have been dead. The country has administered 41.325,560 vaccines to its citizens. The guidelines are to be reframed and updated from time to time as new strains of the virus are posing great threat. Hence, the authorities request the pilgrims to keep themselves updated with the latest guidelines. The crater is a breathtaking anomaly to its surroundings. It is a majestic pockmark (crater-like depression) that is approximately 820 feet deep and 1.2 miles wide. Whilst the whole crater remains dry and barren, there is some green vegetation of palm trees and shrubs around the crater.

What is a crater?

For the uninitiated, a crater is a dent on a surface, caused by another object. Geographically, craters are depressions that look like an eating bowl. Most craters are home to hot gases and liquid rocks, making them unpredictable and dangerous. Al Wahba in Saudi Arabia is one such crater.

Located amidst the dunes, it displays lovely colours from different angles at different times of the day. Watching it from above gives a complete view of the crater and its salt bowl. The crater has white sodium phosphate crystals deposited at the bottom, which creates a glittering effect in the sun. When rain water gets accumulated in the bottom, it looks like a heap of pearls, white and shiny. The shrubs and palms lining the rim of the Al Wahbah crater look stunning after a drizzle, as rain drops sit beautiful on the leaves, adding a dash of green to the gorgeous scenery.

How was the crater formed?

Yonks ago, the crater was assumed to be the outcome of a meteor strike. Later, geologists discovered that it was a maar crater (filled with water and having a shallow crater) lake formed by volcanic activity. According to the soil experts, a massive underground steam explosion resulted in the development of the crater.

Besides, locals narrate fables that explain how the Al Wahbah crater was formed. The legend says that the region was once home to two mountains named Tamia and Cotton. One night, a flash of lightning shone on Cotton and the beautiful sight made Tamia fall helplessly in love with Cotton. But this made Tamia’s mountain-cousin Shelman jealous. He struck her with an arrow, making her fall to the ground and turn into a crater, which later came to be known as the Al Wahbah crater.

How to reach Al Wahbah Crater?

If you are visiting Taif, it is only 250 km away from the city. From Jeddah, it is a 4 hours drive. Once you reach the site, a paved road leads to the crater site and can be easily reached by a car. Rental cars are easily available as it is a popular tourist attraction. Locals often come here in their own cars to have a small picnic while enjoying the panoramic views.

What to do at the Al Wahbah Crater?

1. The visitor center has a museum that explains the structure of the crater and what it is made up of. You can visit the museum to understand in detail about the crater and its geology.
2. The area has specified vantage points that give a good view of the crater and its surroundings. These spots are ideal and also comfortable to sit down, and have a relaxed meal while admiring the natural beauty around.
3. If you wish to have a closer look, there is a narrow trail with roughly carved steps that lead to the base of the crater. It takes about one hour to reach the base and almost two hours to reach back up. The trail is long and the weather is quite hot and dry. For tourists who wish to follow the descent, it is recommended to carry water and food and take breaks whenever needed. Hiking boots are also recommended. The Saudi National Day was first celebrated in 1932 when King Abdulaziz announced the unification of the country as a kingdom. In 2005, Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz declared that from the 75th National Day, the occasion will be an annual national holiday thereafter. The Saudi Arabia National Day was declared to be a public holiday in 2007.

Saudi National Day History

In the pre-Islamic times, the Arabian peninsula had been the habitat of the nomadic tribes. It was Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who brought these tribes together to create a single Islamic religious state. After he died in 632, the territory under Muslim rule immediately expanded across the middle east, from Spain in the west to modern-day Pakistan in the east. In the 16th century, the region was earlier under the reign of the Ottoman Empire and although various sultanates were forming from time to time. It wasn’t until the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I that the modern Saudi Arabia emerged.

Ibn Saud (the immediate successor of Abdul Rahman bin Faisal who had been the last ruler of the ‘Second Saudi State’), became the Sultan of Najd, the central region of Arabia in 1921. He was declared the King of the Hejaz in 1926. Even after being King of both regions, he ruled the two parts of his kingdom separately for the next five years. It wasn’t until 1932 after a two-year campaign subdued and defeated the former allies, that the kingdoms of the Hejaz and Nejd were renamed and unified as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Abdul Al-Aziz ibn Saud, the founder of Saudi Arabia, then became the Kingdom’s first king as well as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques – Masjid Al Haram and Masjid Al Nabawi. Ever since, the day is also known to be the Independence Day of Saudi Arabia or the KSA National Day.

The Saudi National Anthem

Listening to or singing the Saudi national anthem fills its citizens with the feelings of immense pride and patriotism. Interestingly, until 1947, Saudi Arabia did not have a national anthem. When King Abdulaziz came to visit Egypt that year, he asked the Egyptian composer Abdul Rahman Al-Khateeb to create an anthem. That’s when ‘Aash Al Maleek’ was created. The melody, an Arab fanfare style, resembles those of other Arab states in the area at the time. In 1958, the first set of lyrics were composed by Mohammed Talat. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, ‘As-salam al Malaki as Saud’—the Royal Salute of the House of Saud by Abdul Rahman Al-Khateeb—was often presented and played as the Saudi anthem in recordings, even though ‘Aash Al Maleek’ continued to be the national anthem. In 1984, King Fahd asked poet Ibrahim Al Khafaji to write new lyrics, which are the official lyrics today. Lyrics and their translation are as given below. The basic meaning behind the anthem is that the lyrics call for the country to hasten towards greatness while raising its flag, glorify God, and bless the Saudi Arabian King to live a long life.

The National Flag of Saudi Arabia

On the occasion of the Saudi Arabia National day, one can see the Saudi flag everywhere. Citizens take a lot of pride in carrying their flag, hence it is important to know the Saudi flag’s meaning and interpretation. The color green is the dominant color and there’s bold white calligraphy set on a green backdrop that reads, ‘There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God’. These words are an expression of faith that every Muslim utters as they perform their daily prayers. Green is the color of the Prophet (PBUH) and is hence considered sacred in Islam. Also, the sword in the flag is the symbol of the House of Saud, the dynasty that’s been ruling KSA since its founding. The tallest flagpole in KSA, the Jeddah Flagpole is also the world’s tallest flagpole standing 170 mts high. Located in King Abdullah Square, it was inaugurated in 2014 on the occasion of the National Day of Saudi Arabia.

The flag of Saudi Arabia bears strong resemblance to that of Nejd, which was a precursor to Saudi Arabia itself. The flag of Nejd which was used from 1921 to 1926 had a similar green field as the flag of Saudi Arabia, which is quite similar to many Islamic nations. It also bore a white sword and the Islamic declaration of faith, even though it differed from the Saudi flag as the text and emblem were significantly larger and the sword faced in the opposite direction. From 1926 to 1932, Nejd adopted a different pattern for its flag; it added a white border and removed the sword.

Those flags were likewise a strong influence on Abdulaziz Al-Saud, who founded the nation of Saudi Arabia. His banner brought the basis for the nation’s flag. The first flag design was adopted in 1932. It had white stripe and a different design of the sword. Later the changes shrank the white stripe and were eventually removed completely. The most recent design was adopted by the government of Saudi Arabia in 1973, and it changed the flag by altering the shape of the sword.
