<p>As Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar; hence, Ramadan begins with the first sighting of new moon. Islamic teachers upon seeing the new moon declare the onset of the holy month of Ramadan.</p>
<p>1. Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan), observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal), break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days&#8221;.</em></p>

In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived&#8221;.</em></p>

<p><em>&#8220;Every action a son of Adam does shall be multiplied—a good action by ten times its value, up to 700 times. Allah says: With the exception of fasting, which belongs to Me, and I reward it accordingly. For, one abandons his desire and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for a fasting person: one when he breaks his fast, and the other when he meets his Lord, and the (bad) breath (of a fasting person) is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk&#8221;.</em></p>

<p>5. Further, Umm Saleem told that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;(The performance of) `Umrah during Ramadan is equal (in reward) to performing Hajj with me&#8221;.</em></p>

Whoever prays during the nights in Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven. And he who passes Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven&#8221;.</em></p>

<h3>Ramadan hadith on reciting dua</h3>
