All Muslims must observe a month-long fast during Ramadan, pay fitrah, and keep their promises. Violating any of these rules or guidelines or deviating from the right path is considered a sin. To make up for sinning, Muslims are required to pay kaffara as a compulsory donation. It is the only way of sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah. There are set rules on who all can pay kaffara and how much needs to be paid by an individual.

Kaffara meaning

Kaffara is derived from the Arabic root word kafar, which means to cover. In Islamic law, it is a term that means expiation of sin or compensation for an offense. Those who violate an Islamic rule or guideline must make up for their sin through Kaffara. It serves as a means of worship to pray to Allah for forgiveness.

Who has to pay Kaffara

The holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) specify five violations for who all are required to pay kaffara. These five violations include:

Breaking fast during one or more days of Ramadan

Breaking an oath

Violating the sacred ihram restrictions during the holy Hajj pilgrimage

Committing either involuntary or voluntary manslaughter

Zihar, which refers to the practice of unlawfully falsified estrangement of a wife

Kaffara for breaking fast

Ramadan fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and holds immense importance amongst Muslims worldwide. Kaffara must be paid by all adult Muslims who either miss or invalidate their fast during Ramadan without a valid reason. The holy Quran establishes that any adult Muslim who is mentally sound and still knowingly breaks a Ramadan fast without a justifiable cause will be committing a grave sin. It also says that this sin will expose the Muslim to divine torment and displeasure in this life as well as in the Hereafter.

As per a renowned Islamic scholar, intentionally violating a Ramadan fast ranks on the sixth position in the list of the top 70 gravest sins in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described hell as:

“People hung [upside down] by their Achilles tendons, the corners of their mouths rent and dripping blood”.

When asked about who these people were, he replied:

“Such are the ones who used to break the fast before its permissible time”.

Following is a list of violations that can make a fast invalid:

Intending or planning to miss one or more fasts intentionally

Intentionally drinking or eating anything during the fasting hours

Engaging in activities like masturbation and sexual intercourse during fasting

Intentionally hurting themselves, someone else, or an animal

Deliberately making themselves throw up

How to pay Kaffara for breaking fast

The prescribed kaffara for breaking fast on one or more days during the month of Ramadan comes in three different forms. One cannot choose between the three penalties of kaffara. It is obligatory to perform the first form of expiation unless it is impossible to do so due to either unavailability or lack of means. In case performing kaffara’s first prescribed act isn’t possible, one can switch to the second prescribed form. Similarly, only if complying with the second form is impossible can one move to the third form of kaffara. Muslims must perform one of the three prescribed forms of expiation to fulfill their kaffara for breaking fast.

1. The first form

The first form is freeing an enslaved Mulsim. Those who cannot find an enslaved Muslim or don’t have the means to free one can perform the second form of kaffara.

2. The second form

The second prescribed act is fasting for two consecutive lunar months. For Ramadan’s each fasting day deliberately violated, one must fast for two months without taking a break. Moreover, while performing the second form of kaffara, if one deliberately breaks the fast at any time, they must start the expiating fast of two months all over again.

3. The third form

Those who cannot fast for two consecutive months due to a justifiable reason can perform the third form, which is feeding 60 people in need. A Muslim must feed 60 poor individuals for each fasting day of Ramadan deliberately violated. One can do this by feeding 60 meals to one needy person or providing 10 poor people with six meals each or any other combination as long as a total of 60 meals for each day of fasting are given to the poor. Also, a Muslim can choose to pay their kaffara to a charitable organization that will provide 60 people with meals on their behalf.

How is Kaffara for breaking fast measured

Muslims often pay kaffara in terms of money. They can choose to make a payment to the needy, which is equivalent to the value of 60 sa’a of food. Sa’a is a measurement unit used during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and is equal to 4 double handfuls of grain. At that time, the people of Madinah had a volume measurement unit for 60 sa’a known as a wasq, which weighed 130.56 kg in modern measurement units. The food to give as kaffara should include something that the people consider a staple that can be easily stored without a refrigerator, such as wheat, rice, and dried fruits.

Difference between Kaffara and Fidya

kaffara and fidya are two very different kinds of repentance in Islam. While their purpose is to compensate for missed or broken fasts, there is a crucial difference between them.

Fidya is for fasts broken or missed out of necessity, and the individual is unable to make up for it afterward due to a justifiable cause. For example, fidya is applicable for those who could not fast due to pregnancy, ill health, or old age. Kaffara, on the other hand, is for fasts violated or skipped unnecessarily without a valid reason.

Must Read: Fidya: An Obligatory Donation For Missed Fasts During Ramadan

Kaffara for breaking promise to Allah

Apart from Kaffara for Roza, there are several other situations where one must pay Kaffara to repent for their sins. One needs to be responsible while making promises or swearing in the name of Allah. If the promise made is for a noble cause, the individual should perform it regardless of their challenges. However, if one swears on Allah to commit a sin or harm others, they should not commit that sin. In case one does sin, the individual must offer sincere repentance. Whichever is the case, the individual is bound to pay kaffara, including kaffara for breaking oath with Allah for noble deeds or finding the audacity to commit the crime in the name of Allah.

All Muslims should practice their religion wholeheartedly and always keep Allah in mind. They should strive to walk on the right path as commanded by Allah and not be swayed by the temptation of violating any rules or guidelines of Islam. Those who violate these laws must pay kaffara for not fasting or making up for their sin and beg for Allah’s forgiveness. This is the only way they may ever find redemption.

Charity is among the most noble deeds in Islam. In fact, all Muslims celebrate Eid by donating clothes, food, and money to those less fortunate. It is obligatory for Muslims to do charity before or on the day of Eid. This mandatory charity is referred to as fitrah or Zakat Al Fitr. There are numerous rules regarding when to pay, who all are eligible to pay, and how much one has to pay as fitrah. One will have to pay a minimum amount of fitrah set per Islamic rules.

What is Fitrah in Ramadan

Ramadan Fitrah is a mandatory act of charity carried out at the end of the holy month of Ramadan by all the Muslims that have the means to do so. It stems from the word zakat, the third pillar of Islam, which refers to the act of giving charity with mindful intention.

Purpose of Fitrah

All Muslims are obliged to pay fitrah at the end of Ramadan. People do so to show gratitude to Allah for giving them the will, strength, and patience to get through the month of fasting. Fitrah serves as a levy on the individual fasting person.

Fitrah Hadith

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once said:

“The fasting of the month of fasting will be hanging between earth and heavens, and it will not be raised up to the Divine Presence without paying the Zakat al-Fitr”.

The main purpose of paying fitrah is to provide all the poor and needy Muslims with the means of celebrating the joyous occasion of Eid ul-Fitr with the rest of the community. Fitrah allows those suffering from poverty to share Eid ul-Fitr’s merriment, joy, and delight with their families. The prophet (PBUH) reportedly said:

“Gratify [the poor] on this day”.

Additionally, it aims to cleanse a Muslim’s month-long fast from all the adulterations and impurities they have accumulated during their fasting days.

When to pay Fitra on Eid ul Fitr

Fitarh in Ramadan is obligatory for all Muslims and must be paid during a particular duration of time to be considered valid. Missing the deadline of fitrah without a justifiable reason is a sin and must be made up for as soon as possible. Fitrah must be paid between the sunset of the last day of fasting and the starting of Eid prayers, which are performed soon after sunrise the next day. However, it can also be paid before this time, like many of the prophet’s companions who paid fitrah a couple of days before Eid-ul-Fitr.

In the current times, paying Fitra online during the beginning or middle of Ramadan is a widely accepted practice. This ensures that the charity reaches its beneficiaries before the day of Eid. It is believed that the charity should be carried out prior to the Eid prayers. This makes sure that the poor and the needy who receive fitrah can use it to provide for their children and families on the day of the Eid celebration. The prophet’s revered companion Ibn’ Umar used to give fitrah to the needy a day or two before Eid-ul-Fitr. Ibn’ Umar said that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ordered that the donation should be given before Muslims leave to perform the Eid prayers.

Who has to Pay Fitrah

Paying fitrah is a universal obligation for all Muslims around the globe. This means that anyone who follows Islam is liable for the fitrah payment. Abu Hurayrah once said:

“It is due on every Muslim, free or bondsman, male or female, young or old, poor or rich”.

Regardless of their marital status, Muslim women are obligated to pay fitrah from their own wealth. According to some legal schools, husbands must make the payment on behalf of their wives. In conclusion, the payment still must be paid for each individual. In the case of children, they are required to pay fitrah out of their own holdings if they possess any wealth. Otherwise, their guardians, often their fathers, must pay it on their behalf.

Only those who do not possess enough food, shelter, clothing, or other basic essentials to last them for the day of Eid are exempted from paying fitrah. Even those in debt are not exempted unless their debt is due on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, and paying it will leave them in a state where they won’t have enough to meet their basic needs.

How Much is Fitrah

It is obligatory for all Muslims to pay at least one sa’a of grain, food, or dried fruit. A sa’a is a unit of measurement used at the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). One sa’a is equivalent to 3.28 liters or nearly 2.8 kg of wheat, 2.73 kg of rice, 2.4 kg of barley, or 2.7kg of dates. In today’s time, one can also choose to pay cash amounting to the equivalent value of one sa’a. Those who are above average in terms of wealth should try to pay more fitrah than the minimum required amount of one sa’a.

Difference Between Zakat and Fitrah

It is an Islamic duty for all Muslims to pay zakat and fitrah if they have the means to do so. Both zakat (also called zakat-al-mal) and fitrah (also called zakat-al fitr) refer to obligatory acts of charity. They serve as a means of worship and purification. They provide Muslims with a means to show their gratitude to Allah for everything they are blessed with and show compassion for those in need. The difference between zakat and fitrah lies in who is eligible to pay when the charity is due and the amount that needs to be given.

Zakat refers to a Muslim’s saved wealth and is means to purify their earnings. Everyone who has accumulated a certain amount of savings over the course of a year is obligated to pay zakat at any time during the year. On the other hand, fitrah is obligatory for anyone who is capable of making the payment, which is defined as anyone who has enough to eat for one day and night. It is typically a lesser amount than zakat and must be paid before the Eid prayers are performed to mark the end of Ramadan.

Charity is a big part of Islam, and all Muslims are taught to be generous and compassionate towards those who aren’t blessed with great fortune. The Muslim community becomes even more charitable during the month of Ramadan. They are obligated to pay fitrah to those in need before the Eid prayers begin. Making donation is a great way to ensure that everyone gets to share the delights and joys of the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Ramadan is the ninth month and the holiest month of the Islamic calendar. Ramadan donation in various forms make an indispensable part of Ramadan, like fasting from dawn to sunset. Scholars suggest that any act of charity during Ramadan brings one closer to Allah and gain a deeper understanding of human suffering. It gives Muslims a chance to show compassion for those who are less fortunate and poor. Further, Ramadan charity inculcates a feeling of brotherhood and belongingness in the community.

Significance of Ramadan donation

In Islam, charity and generosity have special significance in a Muslim’s life. It is believed that charity is not only valuable for those who receive it, but those who perform charity are also greatly rewarded.

According to the Holy Quran, Allah said:

“Ramadan is the month of giving and mercy, and in it, Allah blesses the believers with forgiveness and being saved from Hellfire. Therefore, whoever is merciful and giving in Ramadan, Allah will be even more Merciful and Giving, and will bestow upon him countless bounties and blessings.”

Though Ramadan is the month when acts of charity are significantly rewarded, one should not focus on the gifts. The sole intention of Ramadan donation should be to aid the community.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reportedly said:

“Ramadan is an Honorable and blessed month, and the rewards for generosity are multiplied in it”.

Owing to the immense significance of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar year, the holy month is a time when all the good deeds receive extra rewards and blessings.

Different types of Ramadan donation

Charity during Ramadan can take different forms. Here are the top ways to give back to the community during the holy month.

1. Zakat – Five pillars of Islam

Counted amongst the five pillars of Islam, Zakat is the obligatory act of charity. All eligible Muslims are required to donate a particular portion of their wealth to the poor and needy every year as Zakat. Paying Zakat is considered to be a great form of worship and is said to purify one’s yearly earnings. The amount paid as Zakat is based on one’s income and the value of possessions. Typically, the minimum amount for those who are eligible is 1/40th or 2.5% of a Muslim’s total wealth and savings. While Zakat can be paid at any time during the year, there is no better time to do it than during Ramadan since the rewards for charitable acts are multiplied at this time.

Must Read: What Is Zakat? – Meaning, Importance, Who Is Eligible, And Facts

2. Ramadan Iftar donation – Ramadan food donation

One of the best ways to multiply the reward and increase one’s Iman in the holy month of Ramadan is by providing those less fortunate with iftar. One can make Ramadan food pack donation and help the society and poor.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

” Whoever feeds a person breaking his fast will earn the same reward as him, without anything being lessened from the reward of the fasting person.”

One can make a Ramadan meal donation to the local mosque or feed a poor family during the holy month. Feeding the poor not only multiplies the rewards of charity but also aids in expiating all the sins of an individual. Giving groceries to poor families during the month of Ramadan can help them prepare iftar and break their fast.

3. Zakat al-Fitr – Obligatory donation on Eid

Before performing Eid prayers at the end of Ramadan, all eligible adult Muslims are required to pay zakat al-Fitr. It is an obligatory act of charity done for the poor and the needy. Zakat al-Fitr can be paid during Ramadan as well as on the day of Eid ul Fitr. The primary purpose of paying zakat al-Fitr is to enable all the members of the Muslim community to enjoy Eid and all joys it brings with it. The amount of Zakat al-Fitr is the same for everyone. The minimum amount is four double handfuls of grain, food, dried fruit, or an equivalent sum of money. Missing the payment of zakat al-Fitr is considered a grave sin.

4. Ramadan Clothes Donation – Sheltering needy from environment

Another great way of giving back to the community during Ramadan is making a Ramadan clothes donation. There are many people who are not fortunate enough to have clothes to keep them shielded from harsh weather conditions. If one is lucky enough to have extra clothes that are not useful anymore, donating them to those in need instead of throwing them away is an excellent means of receiving the blessings of Allah. Whether one hands-off clothes to a charity that accepts these donations or just directly gives them to someone in need, the act is a generous example of charity.

5. Sadaqah – Small acts of kindness

Charity doesn’t always have to be physical or monetary. It can also be giving someone a helping hand or something even as simple as a smile. Every kind act performed during Ramadan is considered a sign of sincere faith and serves as a great way to gain Allah’s blessings. For those who aren’t in a position to donate clothes, food, or money, simple voluntary acts of kindness are highly beneficial as well.

If one manages to do any good deeds like making a Ramadan donation in the form of food, groceries, clothes, money, or even just simple, selfless, kind actions, they will be significantly rewarded and blessed by Allah. While the rewards of making a Ramadan donation are multiplied, good deeds done throughout the year also fetch Allah’s blessings. Muslims should not just limit their generosity and charitable acts to the holy month of Ramadan but also be kind and compassionate all year around.

Fasting during Ramadan is an important and gratifying aspect of faith; it is the fourth pillar of Islam and is a tough act of worship. Allah allows Muslims who cannot complete the fast due to circumstances beyond their control to compensate for the fast. The act to compensate for missed fasts is known as the ‘Fidya’. It is an obligatory payment that Muslims must make if they cannot fast for a reasonable cause and will not be able to make up the fasts later. According to Islamic law, one must utilize their Fidya to offer two meals for people in need for every fast they have skipped during Ramadan.

Fidya meaning

Fidyah is a religious monetary or food offering to support those in need. The charity is done in exchange for fasts missed by someone due to illness or old age in Ramadan. Fidya is only accepted for genuine missed fasts and not for deliberate omission of fasting days.

Importance of Fidya

Apart from adding for the missed fasts, fidya helps the community. The food and money offerings help impoverished families all around the world. So, even if one can’t fast because of their illness, Allah rewards them for their contribution to society. Therefore, one must understand the essence of fidya and donate to the society to increase their Iman during Ramadan.

Who can pay Fidya

Fidya is only paid by someone unable to fast throughout Ramadan, cannot make up for the fasts at any other time, and is unlikely ever to regain the capacity to make up for the fasts. An individual must meet all three requirements; otherwise, it becomes void. Muslims must make up for the missed fasts in any other case.

People who are qualified to pay Fidya for not fasting:

Pregnant women

People suffering from long-term illnesses

Individuals who get sick for a brief period during Ramadan

People on medication

Muslims over the age of 65

How does Fidya work

Fidya essentially comes down to feeding one impoverished person to make up for the day’s missed fast. While choosing the food, it is necessary to remember that it must be widely known and consumed, rather than being a novelty that the locals may struggle to adjust to. The quantity of Fidya was previously fixed as a provision of grains or wheat weighed by two measuring instruments, which was stated and applied by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in prophetic history. The first tool is a Sa’, a little container that holds 4 double-handfuls of grains, and the second tool is a Mudd, which contains one double-handful of grains.

Fidya calculation

Traditional tools

The quantity of Fidyah is believed to be equal to a Sa’, half of a Sa’, or a Mudd. Sa’ and Mudd are instruments with customary volumes of measure that date back to the Prophet’s (PBUH) period but are no longer in use. As a result, today’s Fidyah computation is based on an approximated translation of the quantity of grain contribution from these measures to grams/kilograms. Although there is a discrepancy in the precise equivalent weight, the following are the two most usually proposed calculations:

Measurement tools

Mudd (1 Double-Handful) = 0.650 kg and 0.675 kg

Half A Sa’ (2 Double-Handfuls) = 1.3 kg and 1.35 kg

Sa’ (4 Double-Handfuls) = 2.6 kg and 2.7 kg

Local currency

It is also possible to pay the value of Fidya in a currency amount. The amount paid in currency must be equal to the needed food measurement, and the funds will be utilized to purchase food that can be distributed to the underprivileged. This sum varies in every country, based on various criteria such as currency and market value of staple food.

Mathematical formula: Individually, the amount may be computed using the following formula:

Number of missed Fast x Price of Food (KG) = Amount of Fidyah Due.

Best reasons to pay Fidya

1. Serving people in need

Paying Fidya helps people in need. This implies that an individual’s fidya will significantly impact someone’s life who does not have access to proper, nutritional meals throughout Ramadan.

2. Paying Ramadan Fidya can be someone’s Iftar

Many Muslims prefer to wait until Ramadan begins before making donations, and some even want to wait until the last ten days. Further, a handful of people wait until the Laylatul-Qadr to receive the greatest rewards for their donations. However, it is not as per the Islamic ways of donation. Giving fidya early in the month of Ramadan is more worthy than delaying the contribution till after Ramadan. Also, providing Fidya early ensures that it may be transformed into an Iftar for someone in the later days of Ramadan.

Where to donate the Fidya

Previously, the Fidya was managed by the individual and distributed to people in need within their group and circles. Various institutions, and platforms are now assisting with the Fidya disbursement process. These have aided in the organization and distribution of the Fidya per the demands of the modern world’s population. Additionally, as the Muslim population grows, these institutes ensure that Fidya reaches the appropriate parties worldwide and that the whole global Muslim community is included in the process.

Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran:

“Fast for a specific number of days, but if one of you is ill, or on a journey, on other days later. For those who can fast only with extreme difficulty, there is a way to compensate- feed a needy person. But if anyone does good of his own accord, it is better for him, and fasting is better for you if only you knew”.

– Qur’an 2:184

Fidya donations may make a tremendous impact on the lives of the world’s most vulnerable and needy individuals. Muslims can provide a nutritious Iftar and Suhoor meal to these individuals through Fidya for missed fasts. Further, one should not omit fasting deliberately as it is one of five pillars of Islam.

Also known as Eid salah, Eid prayers are performed by all Muslims on Eid ul Fitr when the fast is broken. This prayer includes two Rakaat units along with six or twelve additional takbeers. The first rakaat has 7 takbeers while the second rakaat has 5 takbeers. The purpose of these prayers is to show gratitude to Allah for blessing Muslims with the holy month of Ramadan and enabling them to do Ibadah during the sacred month. It also allows Muslims to begin the holy day with dutifulness to Allah and show their obedience to Him. Eid prayers are usually performed in congregation with friends, family and other fellow Muslims.

2. Enjoy feasts

It is forbidden for Muslims to fast on Eid ul Fitr. The festival starts with a light breakfast that traditionally includes dates and some sweets. Then, during lunch, families and friends gather and enjoy various local delicacies like kahk, kunafa and qatayef. The feast is considered incomplete without a large spread of food, including dishes like haleem, biryani, kebabs, nihari and the traditional dessert called sewayin. After performing their Eid prayers, Muslims get together with their friends, relatives and acquaintances. They often hold massive celebrations at homes, community centers or rented halls.

Many Muslims volunteer at soup kitchens and food banks, handing out food to those in need. Eid ul Fitr also serves as a day of introspection for Muslims when they reflect on their actions and assess whether they have contributed to the well-being of those less fortunate.

Muslims around the world wear new clothes, distribute sweets and exchange greetings with each other by saying “Eid Mubarak”, meaning “have a blessed Eid”. Elders give children money and gifts, which is called Eidi. Friends, neighbors, colleagues, loved ones and even strangers exchange sweet treats like dates and cookies. Family members buy presents for one another. Typically, most presents are given to the families’ youngest members. Also, Muslims decorate their homes and workplaces into colorful settings.

Jamat ul Vida, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramdan, is a momentous day full of blessings and salvation. People visit mosques in congregation and recite prayers for world peace, prosperity, and harmony.

Jamat ul Vida meaning

Jamat ul Vida is an Arabic term, which translates to Friday of Farewell in English. Etymologically, it comes from the words ‘Juma’ and ‘Wida’, which mean gathering and farewell. Jamat ul Vida is also known as Al-Jumu’ah al-Yateemah.

Jamat ul Vida 2022: Jumu’atul-Wida 2022 will begin on Thursday, April 28th, and end on Friday, April 29th, in the evening.

History of Jamat ul Vida

In Islamic culture, Friday is considered the holiest day of the week known as Jumu’a, or ‘Jummah’. Scholars suggest that if Muslims spend Friday worshiping and reading the Holy Quran, they would be protected by Allah for the rest of the week. Though Muslims consider all Fridays to be noteworthy, the auspicious last Jummah of Ramdan particularly has added significance. As per the history of Jamat Al Vida, scholars say that an angel of Allah enters the Mosque and listens to the Imam (Friday prayer). People are rewarded for going to the Mosque early in the morning for prayer on Jamat ul Vida. According to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Allah would forgive all the sins of those who offer the Friday Namaz on a regular basis.

Significance of Jamat Al Vida

Jamat ul Vida being the last Friday of the holy month Ramadan carries immense significance and blessings. Muslims should make the most of the day by thanking almighty for providing the opportunity to ask forgiveness for their sins and perform good deeds. On this day, Muslims get the chance to renew their faith in the teachings of Allah by reading verses from the holy Quran.

As per Abu Hurairah, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created and on it he was made to enter Paradise.

On Friday, also, Adam was expelled from Paradise.

And the [last] hour (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) will take place on no day other than Friday”.

They ask forgiveness for their misdeeds and beg for Allah’s direction in their future lives. Additionally, Muslims pray for the serenity of their loved ones who have passed away.

Nuzul Al Quran is a Muslim festival to remember the day when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recieved his first revelation of Islam’s sacred book, the holy Quran. As per scholars, the date of revelation is unknown to the Muslim community, but many hadiths suggest that the holy Quran was revealed in the last 10 odd nights of Ramadan. However, some Islamic scholars suggest the origination of Islam as religion took place 17th of Ramadan, with the descent of the holy Quran. The day is known as Nuzul Al Quran and carries immense significance in Muslims worldwide.

Nuzul Quran meaning

Nuzul or Nuzuool means the descent of something special. Therefore, Nuzul Al Quran means the descent of the holy book of Quran from heaven to earth. The act signifies the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Angel Jibrail.

Nuzul Al Quran 2022: It will occur on April 19th, 2022.

History of Nuzul Quran

The first recital of the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the Angel Jibrail, and this is known as Nuzul Al-Quran. Jibrail visited Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) while the Prophet was doing Ibadah in the Cave of Hira on mount Jabal al Nour near Makkah. He took refuge in the cave to get away from the people’s terrible deeds. In the holy month of Ramadan, Jibrail revealed the first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). After this initial revelation, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had numerous more revelations of the holy scripture over the remainder of his life. Scribes collected all these revelations and assembled them into a document that eventually became the holy Quran.

Significance of Nuzul Quran

The celebration of the Nuzul Quran is noteworthy because it commemorates the day Allah gave mankind his last direction, the holy Quran. It is believed that as long as one is in synchronization with the book, the individual will have better relationships with the community and mankind. The Quran also directs humanity on the rightful path shown by Allah, the almighty.

The Battle of Uhud is the second most essential battle in early Islamic history. According to the Islamic calendar, it was fought on the 3rd Shawwal 3 AH. The Uhud war took place in the valley of Mount Uhud near Madinah. In the battle, Muslims in the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) army defended themselves against the raiding Quraish army. The Muslims had an initial edge under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, they lost to the enemy for leaving their posts and celebrating the victory too early. Today, the battlefield of Uhud is open for pilgrims and tourists to experience the religious values of the field.

The Battle of Uhud Causes

Before the battle of Uhud took place, Muslims and Quraish tribes challenged each other at the Battle of Badr. The Quraish army that charged into the Battle of Badr was massive and had an enormous reserve, with better logistics. Despite this, they lost seventy soldiers and leaders while seventy became hostages in single-day combat. The Quraishites were adamant about not admitting defeat. The Quraishites mobilized three thousand fighters for the Uhud Battle to avenge their defeat, compared to 900+ in the Battle of Badr. They marched towards Mount Uhud, Madinah, intending to demolish the Muslims and their faith.

Quraish tribe waged war against the Muslims in the Battle of Uhud. Abu Sufyan was the de facto head of the Quraish. The Quraish army was equipped with 3,000 infantry, 3,000 camels, and 200 horsemen. The Muslims had 700 infantry, 50 archers, and 4 horsemen. The army was led by leaders like Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Ali, Al-Hamzah, and Abu Dujanh. The Quraishi Makkans, with an army of 3,000 strong men, charged toward Madinah under the leadership of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb.

The Islamic army benefited greatly from Mount Uhud’s strategic and topographical advantages. It provided Muslims with a structural defence. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stationed 50 archers on Mount Uhud. This was done to ensure that the Muslims fighting below would have their backs shielded and that the opposing force would be unable to attack them from behind. Regardless of the scenario, he commanded and demanded that these marksmen never leave their posts. Hence, the Muslim Army offered three lines of defence on the battlefield.

The Uhud Battle Summary

The Battle of Uhud took place on Saturday, March 23 625 AD in the valley of Mount Uhud, Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The Makkan army took up position in front of the Muslim lines, with Abu Sufyan in command of the main faction. Ikrimah ibn Abu Jahl led the left and right flanks. ‘Amr ibn al-‘As, the cavalry commander, was in charge of organizing the attack among the cavalry wings. Abu’ Amir permitted to launch the first assault. After being halted by a stone shower from the Muslims, Abu’ Amir and his forces were forced to withdraw behind the Makkan lines.

The Makkan leader, Talhah ibn Abi Talhah al-‘Abdari, went ahead and challenged the Muslims to a duel. Consequentially, Muhammad’s cousin, Ali ibn Abi Talib, dashed forward and knocked Talhah out with a single strike. Talhah ibn Abi Talhah al-‘Abdari’s family was in charge of the Makkan army’s standard-bearing. Therefore, Talhah’s brothers and sons went out one by one to rescue the Makkan banner and battled valiantly until they all died. After the duels, the two armies engaged in a general battle. But, as Muslims stormed through the Makkan ranks, the Quraish confidence began to crumble swiftly.

Battle of Uhud Results

As the Muslims gained pace, they quickly conquered the opposing forces, causing the Muslim army to gain morale. However, as the Muslims successfully forced the Makkans to retreat, a flaw in the marksmen was discovered. The marksmen who were stationed on Mount Uhud’s slope fled to the battlefield. They disobeyed the seniors’ commands because of their immense pride. The Makkan army took advantage of the situation and began to round the mountain, attacking the Muslims from behind. This left Muslims unaware and perplexed. Unfortunately, many Muslims fled the battle, leaving the Prophet and his faithful friends and believers behind. Many Muslims were slaughtered in the Battle of Uhud due to this defiant act, and the Muslims were unable to defeat their foe.

Abu Sufyan decided to return to Makkah rather than re-attacking the injured Muslims of Madinah. Scholars suggest that the Muslims were defeated in the fight because they suffered more setbacks than the Makkans. However, Muhammad and his army returned home that evening after burying the dead bodies on the battlefield. The Makkans retired to Hamra al-Asad, a few kilometers outside Madinah, for the evening. Muhammad dispatched a small group the following day to scout the Makkan army on their way home. According to Watt, Muhammad did this because he knew that a display of power was essential to drive the Makkans out of the Medinan territory.

Lessons from The Battle of Uhud

1. Obeying The Leader: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked the guardians of the hill not to depart on their own, but they did, with disastrous consequences. Even the most powerful leader, like Prophet Muhammad, will not be able to save their pupils if they are disobedient to him. The leader and the followers are both necessary for victory.

2. Being Muslim Doesn’t Assure Victory: The character and actions of an individual determine the outcome of a battle. These attributes can decide the victory or defeat in a battle regardless of circumstances.

Even after many years, the Battle of Uhud is still a significant chapter in Islamic history. Mount Uhud is currently one of the most famous mountains in the Arabian Peninsula. Because of its Islamic past, it attracts numerous visitors. Muslims visit the battlefield of Uhud to witness the historical legacy, graveyards of the soldiers, and the picturesque terrain of Mount Uhud. They also climb the peak to view Uhud’s battlefield. Hiking and rock climbing are among the thrilling activities conducted here. In addition, it houses Ghar Uhud, the cave where Muhammad took refuge after the battle. There is also a mosque present in the valley of the mountain Uhud.

Three Ashras of the Ramadan month

According to Hadith, fasting is not enough for enjoying Allah’s blessings. Attaining control on the amount of sina and praying most of the time is also necessary for forming a spiritual bond with Allah. Ramadan is divided into three Ashras (stages), lasting ten days. The dua recited in every Ashra is for different reasons and benefits. One can recite first Ashra dua for praising the start of Allah’s mercy, second is for seeking forgiveness and the third Ashra duas are for praying to Allah to save an individual from Hellfire.

Ramadan dua for the first Ashra
