The ‘night of forgiveness’, also known as Shab-e-Barat, occurs between the 14th and 15th nights of Shaban – the 8th month of the Islamic calendar. This year, the fortunate Muslims can wish Shab e Barat Mubarak on March 18 till the evening of March 19. The Persian word ‘Shab’ means ‘night’, whereas ‘Barat’ is an Arabic word that denotes ‘salvation’ and ‘forgiveness’. On the night of Shab-e-Barat, Muslims worldwide pray to Allah to seek forgiveness for their sins. Although the primary prayers and recitations of the Holy Quran begin at night, the vibrancy and festiveness commence as soon as the day starts. Muslims throughout the world commemorate the day in various ways, based on cultural diversity and local customs.

15th of Shaban or Shab e Barat celebrations

Muslims who observe this night do so with specific prayers, fasting, and rituals such as remaining awake for most of the night, with only brief intervals, praying to Allah, and reciting the Quran till dawn. Mosques are adorned, and many of them hold recitations and announcements throughout the day to prepare for the night’s primary activities. People create delectable sweets, Halwa, Zarda, and other items during the day to enjoy and share with their neighbors, relatives, and family members. Evening vigils with prayers are occasionally held, although most individuals prefer to pray at home with their own families. Money and food are provided to the needy as a form of charity. On this day, Muslims also visit cemeteries to pray for the deceased family members. They wish their family members with beautiful messages. Some of them are:

Shab e Barat Dua

Praying at the right time of the month allows one to get the most out of the ajar. Here are some useful Shab e Barat Duas to recite on this night.

1. Perform Salatul Tasbih

To please Allah, create an intention for four rakaat, nafal, or Salatul Tasbih, and then begin the namaz as usual. Before continuing with the namaz, recite the Tasbih 15 times after saying the Sanaa. The Tasbih here is: “Subhanallahi Wal Hamdulillahi Walaa Ilaaha Illallahu Wallahu Akbar.” One must next recite Ta’wwuz (Auzubillah), Tasmiyah (Bismillah), and Surah-e-Fatiha, as well as another Surah. Recite the Tasbih 10 times more when finished. The Tasbih is recited ten times more in Ruku. Stand upright and say ‘Sami Allahu Liman Hamida Rabbana Walakal Hamd,’ one must also repeat Tasbih 10 times following Ruku.
2. Praying 100 Rakaat Nafil on Shab e Barat

Praying 100 Nafils using a specific approach on the Holy Night of Shab-e-Barat will bring forgiveness and blessings. Surah-e-Fatiha should be repeated once per rakaat, whereas Surah-e-Ikhlas should be said ten times. This indicates that for every Surah-e-Fatiha in a rakaat, Surah-e-Ikhlas must be recited 10 times. The individual who completes this 100-nafil namaz will be rescued from hellfire, blessed in this life, and Allah Almighty will forgive his sins.

3. Duas to recite after Namaz-e-Maghrib on Shab-e-Baraat

To safeguard the Imaan, read two rakaats of Nafil after performing Maghrib namaz. After Surah-e-Fatiha, recite Surah-e-Ikhlas three times and Surah-e-Falaq once in the first rakaat. After Surah-e-Fatiha, recite Surah-e-Ikhlas three times and Surah-e-Naas once in the second rakaat. Recite Surah-e-Yaseen after Salaam, then Dua-e-Nisf-e-Shabaan, say Dua, and beg Allah to safeguard the Imaan. Read two rakaats of Nafil after Maghrib namaz for Barkat in Rizk/Rozi. Read Surah-e-Yaseen once, Surah-e-Ikhlas 21 times, and Dua-e-Nisf-e-Shabaan once more after that. Then, in Rozi, say a Dua for Barakat, asking Allah not to make you reliant on anybody. For a long and pious life, read two rakaats of Nafil after Maghrib namaz. Once, read Surah-e-Yaseen. Then read Dua-e-Nisf-e-Shabaan for the first time. After then, offer a Dua for a long life of holiness and righteousness.

Muhammad al Mahdi, the 12th Imam of Muslims, was born on the 15th of Shaban month. The community has commemorated that day as his birthday ever since. On the other hand, many Muslims believe that Allah spared the arch of Nuh from the water on the 15th Shaban. According to a hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) visited Jannatul Baqi on the 15th of Shaban. Prophet Muhammad prayed in the graveyard late at night for his departed family members. Following this, Muslims chose to visit the graves of their loved ones and ask for forgiveness.

Shab e Barat is a great night to seek forgiveness from allah. Therefore, wishing Shab e Barat Mubarak to friends and family reminds them of the benefits they can fetch on the night. One must make full use of the night and its value.

Following the gesture, Muslims would go to the graves of their loved ones and seek forgiveness for the deceased.

Significance of Shab e Barat

Apart from Shab e Barat history, scholars say that on the night, Allah takes the past deeds into account and accordingly writes the destinies of an individual in the coming years. However, experts suggest that one should only offer shab e barat prayer on the night if they ritually perform night prayers every day. Otherwise, it would be considered a Bidah (religious innovation), which is highly discouraged in Islam and is a great sin.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told Hazrat Ayesha about 15th of Shaban:

“In it, the record is made of every human being who will be born, and of every human being who will pass away this year. In it, their deeds are taken up to heaven and in their provisions are sent down.”

Shab e Barat namaz

The namaz of 15th of Shaban is no different from the usual daily namaz. Muslims should offer the 15th of Shaban namaz before Betor Namaz and after the Isha. They can recite surah ikhlas, iaat al quchri, surah qadar, or surah taquachur with surah fatah. One should perform as many rakats as possible with at least 12 rakats for maximum benefits. Reciting tasbih tahlil after every four rakats further increases the rewards. The 15th of Shaban namaz is also the best Shab-e-Barat nawafil, along with voluntary fasting.

Shab e Barat prayer and duas

As 15th of Shaban is the night for atonement of sins, one can offer duas that seek forgiveness from all forgiving Allah. One of the most common prayers offered on the night is Salatul Tasbih or the prayer for people seeking mercy. People offer Nafil with 100 rakaats. One can pray Dua-e-nisf-e-Shabaan-al-Muazzam and offer duas after Maghrib prayer to protect one’s imaan, for prosperity in life, and life full of piety and mercy from Allah. Muslims can also offer their own supplications to add on to the prayer of Shaban.

Shab e Barat in Quran

One may not be able to find particular verses relating to the benefits of 15th of Shaban in the holy book of the Quran. However, scholars relate some verses as the proof of the night’s mention in the sacred book.

“Surely, We have sent it down in the blessed Night. Surely, We are the Warner. In this (Night) judgment is given on all matters of wisdom (separately) by Our Command.”

– (Al-Quran, 44:3-5)

Shab e Barat celebration

15th of Shaban is the night to seek forgiveness for the sins and deceased. Hence, Muslims around the world stay awake at night to recite verses from the holy Quran. Conclusively, many countries observe public holidays on the next day of the night. People also visit the grave of the family members and reciting verses from the holy Quran, and atoning for their wrong deeds. As the night is highly rewarding, people keep voluntary fasts and pray at night.

Shab e Barat hadith

There are many hadiths relating to the importance and significance of the 15th of Shaban. In one such hadith, Ibn ali narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“When it is the fifteenth of Shaban, then stand (in worship) at Night and fast during the day. Because Allah descends in this Night at sunset to the first heaven and says: ‘Is there any seeker of forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there any seeker of sustenance that I may sustain him? Are there anyone in affliction, that I may remove his affliction? Is there anyone like this, like that (and so on)’. This continues until Fajr.”

– Ibn Majah

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) offered prayers for his loved ones on the night of forgiveness Shab e Barat. People also prefer to do good deeds on this date as the night is when Allah writes the destiny of Muslims worldwide. Therefore, believers of Islam use the night to seek forgiveness and enjoy good fortune in the future with a clean slate.

Shaban month in Islamic calendar is the eight month that precedes the holy month of Ramadan. People widely celebrate the month for Shab-e-Barat or 15th of Shaban. Fasting during Shaban is recommended for those seeking forgiveness and praise Allah, the Almighty. In this month, Muslims prepare for the prolonged fasting of Ramadan by eating nutritious food and praying for long hours. Shaban acts as a bridge between the sacred month of Rajab and the holy month of Ramadan. Scholars narrate that Rajab is the month of planting, Shaban is for cultivation, and Ramadan is for harvesting. Therefore, good deeds and charity should be planned in Rajab, and performed in Shaban. The blessings of all kind deed is enjoyed in Ramadan.

Meaning of Shaban

The literal meaning of the word Shaban is ‘dispersion’ or ‘separation’. In the past, Arab tribes used to disperse and look out for water and oasis during this month. They did this to prepare for the heat following the month. Shaban gave hope and optimism to bear the heat that prevailed in Ramadan. In the modern world, Shaban metaphorically continues the traditions of preparations, but today, for the long fasting days of Ramadan.

Shaban 2022 dates: Shaban month 2022 will begin from the 3rd March and will end on 1st April. The 15th of Shaban will fall on 18th March 2022.

Shaban month importance

Shaban has many virtues, among which fasting makes the way to reach Allah. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast more in Shaban than any other month (Ramadan being the exception).

The Prophet on Shaban:

“It is a month where people tend to neglect, between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, and I like my deeds to be raised while I am fasting.”

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) learned about the Surah Al Ahzab, the 56th verse of the Holy Quran in Shaban. The surah aims at revealing the benefits and rewards of praying to Allah. Additionally, the Muslims used to pray towards Qibla located in Masjid Al Aqsa. Allah later revealed to the Prophet that he and all the believers of Islam should face Masjid Al Haram as the correct direction during Namaz. Also, the birth of Abbas Ibn Ali is celebrated on 4 Shaban.

Shaban fasting

Upon the question from Usamah ibn Zaid related to increased fasting in the month of Shaban by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Prophet Muhammad said:

“That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.” (An-Nasa’i)

As Ramadan is the month of harvesting good deeds, fasting before and after multiplies the harvest. Therefore, fasting during Shaban and Shawwal is highly beneficial and rewarding. Fasting in the month of Shaban fetches blessings far and beyond. Along with Shaban fasting, Muslims should pray to Allah and recite the holy Quran for asking His permission to keep the fasts and be blessed in Ramadan.

15th night of Shaban

The 15th of Shaban or Shab-e-Barat is the night people use to seek forgiveness for the deceased. Shaban itself is a month in which good deeds are raised and brought in light to Allah, the all knowing. Therefore, praying for forgiveness and blessings paves the path to Jannah (Heaven). People can also fast on 15th of Shaban but it is not obligatory to fast on Shab-e-barat.

Abū Mūsa al-Ash’arī says that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told:
